             2009 QUALIFIER - ROUND 2 RECAP

Round 2 was conducted at Westway Lanes and scoring was good ... actually the scoring was the best ever. The 137 participants averaged 211.45 for the day's 685 games breaking the record of 210.06 from the 1999 qualifier at Rolling Meadows. Also, 99 bowlers averaged over 200 on the day breaking the record of 93 from the 1995 Qualifier at Rolling Meadows. In the end 91 bowlers averaged over 200 for the 10-game qualifier which is 3 more than the previous record of 88 from the 2006 Qualifier at Westway and Eastway.

Beaver Clark not only lead the way with a 5-game total of 1,256 but also captured the Qualifying Title of the 46th Times-News Open with a 10-game total of 2,373. He bested defending champion Lee Eighmy, Jr. by 17 pins. Lee was seeking his 3rd consecutive qualifying title. Both bowlers competed on the B squad.

Tom Petroff, second after round one dropped a spot to 3rd finishing with 2,347. Dave Ward, a finalist last year, completed the qualifier in 4th with 2,330. First round leader Dave Mackowski, Jr. slipped a bit but still qualified in the 5th position with 2,324.

Dave Bille (2311), Cory Bithell (2303), and Lou LaFuria (2301) all eclipsed the 2300 mark and finished 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.

The only other former champion in the field is Pat Malone, the 4-time titlist finished 9th with 2,396. Jeff McKinley, making his second consecutive trip to the finals rounded out the top 10 with a score of 2,291.

4-time Champion Mike Shady finished strong with games of 256-226 and 279 but it was not enough to recover from a poor start as Shady finished 20th with 2,249. 6-time Champion Ron Palombi, Jr. was also a victim, but he was not cut until the final frame. Needing 278 to make the final field, Palombi began the final game with 7 strikes before leaving a 4 pin. A spare and a strike later and he was in a position where 2 strikes and 9 count would give him the 16th and final qualifying position. It was not to be, leaving Jim Moats and Jeff Wieser, both of whom competed on the morning squad, tied for the 16th spot with a score of 2,256.

There will be a 1 game rolloff between the two of them to decide who will compete in the finals and who will finish 17th. The rolloff will commence at 11:00am next Saturday at Classic Lanes.

The finals begin at Classic Lanes on Saturday at noon and conclude at Rolling Meadow Lanes on Sunday at noon. There are 8 bowlers from the A squad qualifier and 8 from B. There are two past champions and three first time finalists (Dunkle, Klick and either Moats or Weiser). 5 of this year's finalists were finalists last year.
