The
45th Annual Times-News Open
opened up at Lake City Lanes, most
recently remembered (2006) as the
site of the highest scoring Finals
round on record. There were some
great scores but nothing like that
day.
Lee
Eighmy, Jr. authored one of the
day's 5 300 games back in 2006 and
was unable to repeat that feat but
he was able to establish a new
scoring mark for a round 1, 5-game
qualifying block and tied the
overall 5-game qualifying block
record. He started strong with 279,
which was the high game of the day,
and followed it up with 248-239-254
and 269 for a total of 1,289, a
257.8 average.
Bob
Stile, a finalist a year ago (11th),
had the highest 3-game set of the
round, 234-269-278-781 and currently
holds down 2nd place with 1,245.
Defending champion Ron Palombi, Jr.
sits in 5th place with 1,179. He had
one of the day's three 279 games, a
solid 8 pin on his 10th ball
crushing his opportunity for a
perfect game. Palombi had 2 perfect
games in the finals at Lake City in
2006.
Chuck Schommer is on course for his
8th consecutive appearance in the
finals with a round of 1,198, good
for 3rd. Jeff McKinley (1,189),
Palombi, Dave Ward and Ray Huggins
(1,161), 4-time Champion Pat Malone
(1,157) and Rod Silman, Sr. and Dave
Warren (1,152) round out the top 10.
Other Past Champions include Mike
Shady (2002-03-04-06) 16th, Ken
Berlin, Jr. (1987) 27th, Steve Benke
(2001) 31st, Vinny Orlando (1982-92)
49th, George Warren, Jr. (1986-1993)
60th, and Russ Snyder (1996) 104th.
