The
finals of the 45th Annual Times-News
Open moved west to Eastway Lanes for
the final 8 match games of the 2008 event.
Lee Eighmy, Jr., the qualifying
champion, began the day with the lead, a lead he would never
relenquish.
Ron Palombi Jr., started the day off
perfectly ... well almost. Palombi left a solid 8-pin on his 12th
ball for a 299 in game one that sent him from 5th to 2nd, just a
mere 5 pins short of Eighmy's lead.
Eighmy reeled off games of 258-239-259
in games 2-3-4 to increase his lead to 129 pins. Palombi would
keep the margin within reach but when Eighmy defeated Bob Kane,
Jr. 289-230 in game 14. His lead reached 168 pins and when Palombi
dropped his game 15 match Mike Shady snuck into 2nd, 168 pins
behind with Palombi another 3 pins back in 3rd leaving an
anti-climatic finish for the title. It was Eighmy's 3 Times-News
title, adding to titles he captured in 1998 and 2000.
Even with Shady defeating Eighmy in
the position round 234-208, Palombi had a shot at solo 2nd until a
4 pin cut his chances short. He settled for 3rd, 10 pins back of
Shady. Shady was also the runner up to Eighmy in 2000 in finals
that concluded at Eastway.
The high round of the day belonged to
David Warren. Warren moved from 9th to 4th on the strength of an
8-game block of 1,951, a 243.9 average. Warren was still in 7th
place after 14 games but his 257-289 finish was enough to jump to
4th, 28 pins ahead of Paul Marnella.
